On February 17, New York’s Department of City Planning approved Toll Brothers’ proposal to rezone a three-acre tract of land it owns on the Gowanus Canal between Carroll and 2nd Streets to make way for a 460-unit mixed use development. The news was not publicized until the blog Pardon Me For Asking received the news from Marty Markowitz’s Land Use Coordinator; none of the input from the public or the Borough President’s office—specifically, a recommendation to cap building heights at 85 feet rather than 125 feet—was taken to heart by City Planning. The approval move’s the project to the final stage of the ULURP process—the City Council now has until the first week of April to render a decision. It’s hard to imagine anything but a “Yes” vote.

  1. no, I don’t think site of manufactured gas plant.
And isn’t this just a ‘rezoning’ by planning dept.?
would permit anyone to build according to new zoning.
Not the same as DOB permit, or getting financing or whatever.

  2. the Toll brothers like all developers file zoning change all the time. It Behooves them not to renege as they wouldn’t get any further changes. Its nice to be paranoid and I’ll give you that even paranoids have enemies but sometimes its just paranoia.

  3. So, now the affordable housing part of this project is in jeopardy. Has Bill De Blasio publicly commented on this since his support of the project and its height were contingent on affordable units? If Toll reneges on building the affordable housing there is certainly nothing that will prevent them from deciding that using union labor is too costly in this economic climate. I hope all of the non-NIMBYs who raved about the affordable housing and union labor are happy. The project might create jobs but not necessarily for the unions. You can thank Amanda Burden.
