According to Lost City (and the reader who sent in the photo at left), Court Street was blocked off this morning to make way for the a large crane that will be, reportedly, involved in the demolition of the building. “The word from the surveyors is: It’s coming down!” writes LC. “Has to come down. No choice. Too damaged. The constant rain was the likely culprit.” These photos are a couple of hours old. Any update? GMAP

  1. I noticed that the three houses on warren(?)baltic(?-sorry, I can never keep the cross streets straight–and i’ve lived around there for 15 years!) going towards smith were also posted with notices to vacate, so the makes me think that the real problem is in the back, not the front. But seriously, a patrol car parked in front since Saturday night? A bizarre waste of resources.

  2. “That seems like a pretty lame reason for a building to collapse.”

Yep, especially since the real excuse is letting go UNTIL it needs to be demo’d. But get’s darn costly when HPD has to do it…and bill the developer…or Dept. of Finance puts a lien on the property.

Search 18-20 Jackson Ave on Mr. B’s site.

Or 214 25th St post from last week. Walked by that horror show today…the GC removed all the floor joists before skating. That brick box has no interior support. Hope DOB gets HPD out there real soon, other that just writing new violations. Someone is going to get hurt walking to the 25th St. R stop at 4th Ave.

  3. Trust me, when it collapsed, the rain was coming down so hard that it could have been a monsoon. I heard it, and thought a tree had fallen, so I am not surprised a building with a methadone clinic (not abandoned) was unstable enough that it collapsed in heavy rain. Roofs are not indestructable.
