The much-anticipated expansion of P.S. 8, the elementary school on Poplar and Hicks Streets in Brooklyn Heights, began last week. When we walked past yesterday dump trucks were carting away dirt and debris and DOB permits posted at the site showed a start date of January 26. The new addition is supposed to add 18,000 square feet and seven new classrooms to the bursting-at-the-seams-from-its-own-popularity school.
PS 8 Parents Pitched Plans for New Addition [Brownstoner]

  1. I think the expansion of both of the schools is a great thing…..it is too bad that PS 8 couldn’t build large enough to accomodate 6-8th, it seems like the community needs it.

  2. The expansion of Berkeley Carroll is opposed by a handful of property owners adjacent to the school. But I am sure that all the families that send, or have sent, or plan to send their kids to that expensive school will break the knees of anyone that tries to slow them down.
In the case of PS8 the community and the BHA, as I understand it, were thrilled with the expansion and in fact lobbied hard for it. The only disappointment being that it will not be a larger addition so as to accommodate grades 6, 7, and 8.

  3. I am curious if there has been any community push back on this expansion, can any Brooklyn Height residents offer an insight? The expansion of Berkeley Carroll has had a tremendous amount of push back form the local community, even though everything planned seems well within scope and within DOB restrictions.
