Last we heard about Willoughby Square Park, it was last spring and the EDC was soliciting community input on the design of the one-acre space in Downtown Brooklyn. Well, it seems that some decisions have been made, because there’s now a rather specific rendering up on the EDC website along with the news that Hargreaves Associates has been named the project designer. Update: Just got this note from EDC…”the design you show is preliminary – it was reviewed and approved by CB2 following a community design charette this summer and has been submitted to the Public Design Commission but is still pending final approval.”

  1. Ah… I don’t care. I’ve only been to that park a couple times. Just thought it was strange… went to dinner with a friend and then on our way to a show at BAM, I suggested we stop and sit in the park since we were early. Turns out, that wasn’t possible!

My ‘local’ park is Prospect Park. It’s much better. 🙂

  2. tybur6 – there used to be lots of benches all the way down DeKalb by the park. The city took the benches out (late 80’s?) which diminished the number of wino parties held there. Before that, groups would sit on the benches drinking and cursing and throwing bottles at passers-by. It was hard to get to the DeKalb Ave. trains walking on that side of the street.

I imagine the benches could be replaced now, but you’d need to do some lobbying somewhere – Parks or DOT I’d imagine.

  3. The quality of life enhancements taking place in downtown Brooklyn are really adding up (Avalon’s mini park, the Flatbush Ave beautification project, and the Fulton Mall enhancements). If Albee Sq. comes to fruition it will cap a pretty remarkable transformation of the area.

  4. I notice the rendering doesn’t show the B38 struggling to make the turn at the bottom of the park. A zillion people up in arms about the Atlantic Yards and not a peep about private developers taking over public streets and public transit for their own front yards. This is ridiculous.
