OMG this place is awesome! This 1905 1889 Romanesque Revival house at 287 Dekalb Avenue has some of the sickest original detail we’ve ever seen in Clinton Hill. The house, which appears to have been in the same family for over three decades, was designed by Montrose Morris, we learned from the LPC designation report on the Clinton Hill Historic District. Here’s some more from that report: “Nos. 285-289 form one of the outstanding rows in Brooklyn…They were designed in such a way as to give the effect of one large mansion. The facades of these buildings display the textural and chromatic contrasts that are a hallmark of Romanesque Revival style buildings.” The asking price is $2,250,000. We are very jealous of whoever gets to buy this place!

  1. Ok Benson, I will get your email. Taking a break from Brownstoner is probably something I will be doing to some extent too, since I am having a shift in my job and really need to focus more on work. And for you, in the meantime,
    take care and I will contact you.

    Best,
    Domatella

  2. Donatella;

    Thanks. I appreciate it.

    I’ve decided that I need to take a break from Brownstoner. I wish the best to you. Etson and DIBS have my e-mail address, if you want to meet some time for lunch. Take care.

  3. Benson,

    Understood, but just wanted to let you know that I had to duck out that day and leave early otherwise I would have answered your question — anyone out there like me?? with a resounding YES. I got a little bent out of shape (sorry, was tired and a little touchy) since I felt misunderstood (and lumped together in a category I did not belong in.) But I really wanted you to know that I am really sorry about the way that day turned out.

    Have a good night (and I hope you read this!!!)

  4. Montrose, just call. Of course, would be very helpful if you could say “It will be published by Publisher X in the spring of X year.” Otherwise, they won’t take you seriously. I know. Just say you are researching a book for Brownstoner. With Mr. B’s permission, of course.

  5. I admire this house, especially the exterior, but wouldn’t want all that dark woodwork. I do hope it goes to someone who appreciates it.

    I like the top floor–so airy! And they kept the floors and cool curved wall.

  6. Donatella;

    Thanks, but I will not post on the OT. If I did, I would rip a new one on a few people there, who royally deserve it. They are smug bigots, plain and simple, and I have no desire to deal with them.

  7. When I was in college, this building had a group lease with several tenants in the place. On the parlor floor there was a hippy named Janet Planet with her little blond son and boyfriend. The boyfriend was rebuilding motorcycles in the living room. When Henry and Dennis moved in, they had to do a LOT of work to get the oil and crap out of the floor. Incidentally, the stoop is painted brownstone pink over white/gray cement patches.

    The place is beautiful though. They had a natural stone walled kitchen in the basement at one time – not sure it’s there now or not (or how the design of it endured – it might look dated as all get out).

    I’m certain this is an estate selling, but don’t know any details.
