Remember in the beginning of the summer when Community Board 2 wasn’t too keen on the idea of the Human Resources Administration signing a lease at 470 Vanderbilt? And then the HRA withdrew its application? Well, at Tuesday’s CB2 meeting the HRA came with a revamped plan which ended up getting approved by the board. HRA addressed CB2’s main concerns about the traffic and loitering impact on the neighborhood. To decrease loitering, there will be additional security guards hired for the site. And after polling of HRA employees, most plan to take public transportation to 470 Vanderbilt. There is very little extra parking in the area, but DOT will look into freeing 121 spots by eliminating some parking restrictions on Atlantic and Cumberland. HRA is also looking to provide shuttle service to 470 Vanderbilt from the Atlantic Avenue subway, although it would be strictly for city employees. The good news for business owners in the area is that the 1,800 staff and 1,500 visitors will bring an estimated two to four million dollars in economic activity to the area. (Over what time period was not specified.) HRA is shooting for a Spring 2012 move in.

  1. they do rent parking, call the super
slated for building, which will have underground parking so can’t be promised to office tenants
building might start in 2012, hopefully will have a supermarket!

  2. G man is good. Loitering (meaning getting in line early before they open) will be solved by letting customers in early to a holding area instead of leaving them in the cold. Only fair.

The building will have tenants. They will try to park. Which would have more cars, a private company or HRA with low income clients?

parking is a luxury good, not a right

Fulton Street merchants need this so bad they can taste it

2000 lunch buyers a day at 6 bucks a pop 200 days a year is two million four hundred thousand dollars

  3. There is some misinformation and misinterpretation above.

First off, the move-in is Spring 2012.

The additional parking will not be just for “the guvment;” it’ll be open to anyone. donatella, the parking lot on Fulton Street is not being made available to city employees or the agency clients. The shuttle bus is intended to encourage use of public transportation.

  4. Agreed, this will be a good thing for neighborhood businesses to help get regular daytime traffic to supplement the busy morning and weekend rush.

And I doubt the shuttle option will end up happening. That would lead to plenty of traffic on its own, with idling buses around Atlantic Center, and most people will probably just get used to walking a few blocks.
