The long-empty St. Teresa’s school complex in Crown Heights won’t continue to be unused for long: At last week’s Community Board 8 meeting, plans were revealed to renovate the three buildings at St. Johns and Classon for a training academy complex for NY State Court officers. The design process for renovating the buildings, which have been boarded up for 20 years, is under way, and construction is supposed to begin in the fall. When work wraps in the summer of 2013, classrooms, dorms and a training facility will be in place. (Don’t worry, no shooting practice allowed!) At the meeting there was some concern voiced over parking, but it was pointed out there’s an existing garage on St. Johns Place. Overall the plan was praised for bringing life to the old buildings. 1. I think that despite the presence of the parking garage on St Johns Place, there will be parking issues. NYPD Traffic don’t usually ticket cars that they think belong to law enforcement (you say professional courtesy, I say corruption, whatever). Be prepared to see a large influx of cars because public sector workers drive much more than private sector (because they have access to parking).

Brooklyn Jesuit Prep is to remain, I hope that some of the lease payments the Diocese of Brooklyn is to receive will be spent to renovate BJP and St Teresa’s parish church and accessory buildings, but I suspect the Bishop has earmarked the funds for other projects – there just doesn’t seem to be a very big congregation at St Teresa’s so it won’t be a spending priority.

I have noticed that in addition to the buildings noted in the official plans, two adjacent buildings on Sterling Place have been boarded up, these were derelict and hopefully are now to be rehabbed.

  2. I’m really glad to see the building going for a good use. Still, I have to wonder why the DOE did not purchase this building to use for one of the many new schools it tries to shove into existing schools, thereby avoiding the conflict it usually stirs up with the local community.

  3. Wow, good news for the neighborhood. I was actually born on this block and went to St. Theresa of Avila (as was the formal name)from K – 4th grade.

  4. Great news! And a plus- finding a new use for beautiful old buildings. Court Officers are often forgotten, but 3 of them lost their lives on 9/11 saving others.
