stolengate52011.jpgThere was more information about recent spate of iron-gate thefts in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill (first noted on The Local) in a Times story that says while cops don’t have an exact tally of the number of thefts, according to gossip, it’s “somewhere between several and a score.” A witness claims they were brazenly being removed last Monday at around 8 in the morning on Vanderbilt by two men who made off in a white van. Meanwhile, the article says some Fort Greene residents have started putting locks on the hinge side of their gates. The perennial question, though, is how thieves make money off the gates: While one officer said he believed they were being sold for scrap, the manager of a nearby scrap yard says he only pays 12 cents a pound for the type of iron in them.

  1. Major amount of railings in front of the bank on Bedford and Broadway are gone.

I hope the fact that my gate is 3/4 rust will save it from being stolen. What do you think?

  2. I heard that all the gates that weren’t set in cement were pulled up along that stretch. That is really evil and reminds me of the days when thieves took front doors right off their hinges and stole them. Bastards.

  3. I had my gate stolen in Bed stuy last week. Stonergut if you or anyone else has a spare or unused gate they would like to sell please email me beegeee1188 (at) yahoo(.)com please remove ( ) thanks

  4. If anyone who has had a gate stolen recently wants one, I can measure an extra one I have and if it fits for you, sell it for a low-ish price. The gate – while pretty – will need some repair (part of the flat scroll work on it has rusted). But it’s very repairable and temporarily usable as is.

Respond here and we can get in touch.

And FYI, trolls, I didn’t steal it!

  5. if you’re refering to eddie’s place off grand- nothing there is stolen- he does demo work and gets a lot of his stuff that way.

i didn’t have my gate stolen- (that happened in the 70’s)- but i came home to find my daughter’s bike gone- the chain was snipped (it was a heavy duty chain- and had been chained to the front window grate-

you have to be evil to steal a little kids bike- evil.
