It’s not everyday you see a listing with its own chicken coop but Red Hookers are crazy like that. This particular house at 6 Dikeman Street, while not much to look at from the outside, is actually pretty cool. The interior, while hardly high Victorian, has some character to it; at 1,600 square feet, though, it is on the small side. But the real fun happens outside, where, in addition to the chicken coop, there’s an entire side lot that can be used for parking or just a giant garden. There’s also a 700-square-foot studio back there. Neat, right? The asking price is $975,000.

  1. people are so silly about vegetables. you are a hundred times more likely to be poisoned by stuff grown in the boonies near livestock (that’s where e-coli comes from, cow poop) than from veggies grown in Brooklyn, isolated from agricultural contamination.

  2. anyone know what the original facade would have looked like? just plain brick on the entire front? i’m loving the urban farm fantasy…

  3. nothing at the red hook farm is grown in red hook soil — the farm is not organic, and it’s raised beds of hauled-in dirt placed over asphalt. red hook soil is very contaminated, but one can always grow their veggies in raised beds!

  4. I live near the BQE and my downstairs neighbors are big gardeners. All in containers, of course. I would eat their herbs and veggies, if they would offer some…they did test the soil when they moved in and it had high lead content. PS: I love hanging out in Red Hook but you are screwed every which way these days transportation wise if you don’t have a car. Although if you have a million to buy property, you probably do.

  5. Dave, but you wouldn’t have to take Amtrak to Philadelphia every weekend. By driving over the Verazanno and then the Outerbridge you’re already two thirds of the way there. How do you get home when you get to he philly train station? another taxi?
