The list of newcomers to Fulton Street keeps getting longer: Women’s Wear Daily (via Racked) reports that Express just signed a lease at 490 Fulton, where it will occupy 10,000 square feet of space. A Filene’s Basement/Syms hybrid will occupy another 40,000 square feet. According to WWD, the chain’s CEO, Michael Weiss, got his retail training in a Fulton Street department store that is now Macy’s. And just in case you’re losing track, Racked complied a handy list for all the new things to expect on that short stretch of Downtown Brooklyn: “H&M, Aeropostale, The Gap, Filene’s Basement, and Shack Shack.” Phew! 1. I wonder how these stores will do. It is often assumed to be a no brainer that these higher end retail will do well on Fulton because of the nearby demographics but I wonder if Fulton Mall can really support these kind of stores right now. I know that Forever 21 opened at the Mall and I am told (by people who know these things) that it was horrible (and after the Mall was razed) – not reopened.
If I was one of these retailers I’d be looking for spots on Court (Muni bld for ex) in Courthouse on Boreum (where Mortons is) and on Atlantic between the 2. Seems to me it is a safer retail bet AND the rents are likely to be the same or better.
