Brides who were counting on picture-perfect weddings at Park Slope’s Montauk Club have seen their plans ruined by scaffolding surrounding the building, according to a story in Metro. The paper reports that six brides who signed contracts to have their ceremonies in the space last year—and paid $1,800 deposits—claim they were “misled” because they weren’t given enough advance notice that the landmark on 8th Avenue and Lincoln Place would be shrouded by scaffolding now, thus destroying the photo ops they envisioned. One of the brides says she “cried hysterically” when she saw the scaffolding. Meanwhile, another has started a blog about her ordeal, writing: “Not only is the exterior ruined, but the large windows that surround the club now look onto a construction mess. Contrary to what management is saying, the permits for construction were applied for in July 2010. They had complete knowledge of the construction plans at the time we booked our wedding.”

  1. The Montauk Club is part of a condominium, having sold off much of the building in the 1990s for conversion to apartments. The facade repairs and restoration are undertaken and paid for by the condominium, which is also the organization that applied for all permits, etc. The Club had no control over the timing of the work and it is my understanding that affected wedding parties were offered a substantial discount.
