In an article about old banks around the city being repurposed Crain’s touches on plans for the Williamsburgh Savings Bank, which involve turning the space into a “museum for Brooklyn artists” as well as a banquet hall. Developer Juan Figueroa’s design team has to figure out how to display art inside the building on Broadway and Driggs without affixing it to the walls, since that’s a Landmarks no-no. (Figueroa’s architect refers to the building a “white elephant.”) The $3 million renovation also involves restoring the dome’s fresco and installing a new ventilation system, among other things. There are still no specifics on what Figueroa plans to build on the land adjacent to the bank where an addition was demolished, though.

  1. Americans can be such cultural Neanderthals. A “white elephant?”. That is like saying Les Invalides is a white elephant or the Winter Palace is one.
And evidently coming from an architect! Mind boggling.
