Last month there was news that the MTA wants a developer to take over its former headquarters at 370 Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn, and this morning there’s buzz that New York University would like to be that developer. In a New York Times story about universities vying to win a city competition to construct a new science grad school, there’s mention of how N.Y.U.’s proposal involves 370 Jay: “N.Y.U. wants to acquire the old New York City Transit headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn and overhaul it inside and out. John H. Beckman, a university vice president, said such renovation could be environmentally preferable to demolition and new construction.” Stanford and Cornell, which both want to construct new facilities on Roosevelt Island, “are widely seen as the universities to beat” in the competition.
