The release of a new report from NYU gives a much-needed boost to the movement to convert the Bedford-Union Armory in Crown Heights into a community facility along the lines of what has happened in Park Slope in recent years. The study, which was conducted by grad students at NYU’s Wagner Capstone program at the request of Borough President Marty Markowitz, suggests a variety of possible uses, ranging from a sports complex to youth and senior services center to entertainment venue. “We are still at the beginning of the process, so I can’t say, ‘I want this use’ or ‘I want that use.'” said Pearl Miles, CB9 district manager. “We just want what’s best for the community.” Another option favored by Markotwitz: Roller skating rink. Confessing that he himself was a “horrible skater,” Markowitz, who has pledged $1 million to the project, told The Daily News that he thought “It would be a wholesome activity for children and families.” Regardless of the specific programming plan that is arrived at, it seems like the momentum towards activating the great space is great news for the area. Additional funding for the project could also come from the construction of affordable housing on the adjacent empty lot. The entire press release cane viewed on the Borough President’s website.
