Local high school students, the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, and La Fantastica Design Studio have put their heads together to redesign an underutilized space at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Gold Street. The students took eight weeks to brainstorm amenities that would make the intersection better for pedestrians — benches, tables, chairs, a green wall, and a rain water catchment device. And over the next two weeks the students will install a 50-foot-long green wall made of old plastic milk crates and plantings. The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership posted the above photo of the green wall installation today. The next phase of the plaza redesign includes a rainwater catchment, a drip irrigation system, and a vegetable garden. Those improvements should take place next spring.
