A new wine store called Corkscrew Brooklyn is scheduled to open October 17 at 489 Myrtle Avenue near the Navy Yard in Clinton Hill. Owner Karin Torres says the shop will focus on wines from female growers, family-run wineries and local producers. “Mass-market wines are often made by companies, not people,” said Torres. “They sell well because of the marketing machine behind it, not because of the quality. It takes a little more time to find these wines that don’t have a million dollar marketing machine behind them, that are unique and tasty and incredibly high-quality.”

She wants to make buying wine an easy, stress-free experience, instead of seeming snobby or shaming people into buying wine that’s too expensive. The store’s average wine will be just under $20, she said. The shop will host weekly tasting events and sell glassware, wine accessories and books. Before Corkscrew, Torres owned another wine store, Atlantic Cellars, which she sold in 2011. GMAP
