The walls are going up fast at 1012-1018 Decatur Street, where an apartment building is planned. When we stopped by a few weeks earlier, workers were just putting in the foundation.
The site, which also goes by 1370 Bushwick Avenue, was a tire repair shop for many years. The shop owner was murdered in 2011 in what police think was a botched robbery attempt. As it happens, on our first visit to the neighborhood, where we now live, about eight years ago, we parked outside the tire shop and returned a few hours later to find one of our tires flat from a nail.
The latest new-building application, which has not yet been approved, calls for a five-story building with ten apartments. Older permits specified four four-story buildings with two families each.
