The former Whale Oil Company headquarters at 14 53rd Street on the Sunset Park waterfront has gotten a new lease on life as office space for creative and tech businesses. The 1940s-era industrial building, Whale Square, offers 400,000 square feet of space spread across seven stories. The first floor has 20-foot ceilings, and the third floor has 50,000 square feet of column-free space, making the building ideal for an open office or workplace. The owners are finishing a $5 million renovation that will transform the building into a hub for creative, tech or fashion companies.

The renovation will bring a new lobby, HVAC and electrical systems. The newly revamped building includes parking for $125 a month, 24-hour security with cameras throughout the property. Several photography studios call the building home, as well as more industrial tenants like woodworking workshops, electronics companies, and wholesale distributors.

Looking out over the waterfront, the building has spectacular views of the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty, and Manhattan. It’s also located two blocks from the nearly complete 22-acre Sunset Park Waterfront Park, which will have sports fields, tidal wetlands, a sloping lawn, a wooded area, harbor view points, walkways, and concession stands.

Tenants who rely on the subway can take the R train to the 53rd Street station, which is about four blocks away, or the ferry that runs between Wall Street and 58th Street on the Sunset Park waterfront. The landlord will also provide shuttle service to and from Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center and Smith-9th Street subway stations.
