The foundation is finished, and the steel structure has just passed the first floor at the big build replacing the old Weinstein hardware store on the corner of Tompkins and Halsey, Brownstoner saw on a recent visit. As readers will recall, a six-story building with 44 apartments is planned here at 420 Tompkins Avenue.
Weinstein’s had been closed for a few years, and the low-slung building occupied a large lot with unused FAR. Many such properties are now under construction in Bed Stuy, which is booming with development.
Architect firm Charles Mallea Architect is designing a modern-style building here with what appears to be concrete, steel, glass and rusty Corten steel paneling. Local developer Moses Strulovitch of CS Management bought the site in 2006 for $1,065,000 from longtime owner Warren Weinstein.
The apartment house will have 30,704 square feet and include an exercise room, lounge, bike storage, and laundry room, according to permits. The building will have 21 parking spaces for cars, as required by zoning, but no stores on the ground floor.
It’s on a major thoroughfare in Bed Stuy, on the Halsey bus line, and is the gateway to a large retail corridor on Tompkins.
One property away the same architect is designing a very different looking building with mirrored cracks at 410 Tompkins, which commenters dubbed the Bulgarian Neo-Goth Supervillian Crack Lair.

Unfortunately, neither of these new buildings respect the context of the surrounding neighborhood. Both are banal boxes arbitrarily dropped down into an historic neighborhood. Landmark Bed-Stuy now.
