Bedford Stuyvesant House for Sale -- 702 Monroe Street

Mention a gut renovated Bed Stuy townhouse and it summons images of a flip, given a quick overhaul for a tidy profit. But this Italianate wood-frame number, at 702 Monroe Street, is a different beast, having been redone by architects who preserved the clapboard exterior and its front porch while modernizing the inside and rear.

The architects in question are the Brooklyn-based firm noroof, whose modern renovation of a brick house in Greenpoint got a recent writeup in Dwell magazine. They even gave this Bed Stuy house a name: porcHouse.

They’ve kept some original details, like the bluestone mantel in the dining area and ceiling moldings and plaster detailing, while reworking much of the three-story space, making for a beguiling mix of classic and modern.

They’ve also upgraded the infrastructure — a project that included putting in a new roof, new electrical and plumbing and a zoned HVAC system — and added an extension on the rear.

It’s set up as a one-family, with three bedrooms, an office space and laundry on the top floor, a rec room and storage on the garden level, and kitchen and living area on the parlor level.

The house, listed by Christina Abad and Lindsay Barton Barrett of Compass, is listed for $1,635,000.

Think the ask is on target? How do you like the renovation?

  1. Wow. Nice job. I want to see another picture of that incredible shower stall. Everything feels bright and smart. Love the top floor laundry. Love the additional space in the rear by the dining and kitchen. As for price, I wonder what the premium is for this over what a generic renovation of the same house would fetch.
