There are two tours for those interested in exploring the neighborhoods and architecture of Brooklyn this weekend. And since they’re on different days, the truly motivated among us can make it to both.

  • The 27th Annual Bed-Stuy House Tour will be held on Saturday, October 15. The tour starts at 11 a.m. from Historic Boys High School on Putnam & Marcy and will proceed rain or shine. Tickets are $20 and are available at Brownstone Books, 409 Lewis Ave, 718-953-7328 or Lewis Gallery, 525 Atlantic Ave 718-624-8372.
  • On Sunday, author and historian Francis Morrone is leading a tour of Cobble Hill and the Columbia Street Waterfront District. Sponsored by the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment, the tour will cover Cobble Hill Park and Verandah Place (as well as the Workingmen’s Cottages and the Tower and Home Buildings) followed by a visit to the old waterfront area. The tour is from 2:00 to 4:00, and meets at the southwest corner of Court and Congress Streets. The cost is $11, $9 for BCUE members, and $8 for students and seniors.

    1. Except for the most intricate pieces that had to be reproduced, the woodwork stayed in place during stripping and refinishing. It should have been a 6 month project (stripping, repair, reproduction and refinish), however, it took much longer (due to contractor’s personal issues). It’s not an easy thing to live though, the dust and smell made us a bit ill, but it was worth it.

Initially we thought about stripping some of it ourselves, but quickly thought better of it as it would have been quite overwhelming and the fact that we have allergies would not have helped.

    2. House #4,
Did your woodwork remain in place in your home while being stripped or was it taken down and done away from your home. How long did it take? I’m trying to determine how logical it would be to do some of the stuff myself. i.e. Wainscoting, Doorways and moldings.

      Thanks,

    3. Please do share! It’s so refreshing to see people interested in HOUSES and being positive (as opposed to how some recent threads have tended to play out).

    4. By the way, we who live in BedStuy have been trying to tell you that, even beyond Stuy Heights, we too have beautiful homes and that our neighborhood is not a cesspool of crime, drugs and racial tensions. I’m happy that the tour has allowed many of you to see for yourself that it is a neighborhood with professionals, artists, etc. and not just men on the corners.

    5. We had our woodwork on the first two levels completely stripped and restored (the top levels were not salvageable) by A Tamer Restoration & Refinishing & Reproduction, (718) 855-9530. He not only stripped and refinished the wood, but he was also able to reproduce all of the missing intricate pieces and no one can tell the old from the new. Unfortunately, $40k is about right, but it is really worth it.
