Front Page Forum: Best Yoga in Fort ProHill?

What with New Year's resolutions just around the corner and all, we figured it would be a good time to ask around about a good yoga studio in our new neighborhood. So what is the best that Clinton Hill, Fort Greene and Prospect Heights (or western Bed Stuy for that matter) have to offer?

I like the name - Fort ProHill

I have been meaning to these places, but never seem to make time. Maybe we'll see each other there:

1. Embora - Fulton at Washington (they seem to offer a lot of other classes as well, like african dance)- www.embora.com

2. Lucky Lotus Yoga - Dekalb at Carlton - www.luckylotusyoga.com

3. Hot Yoga People - Fulton at Ashland - www.yoga-people.com

Shambhala Yoga on Washington Ave & (St. Marks's?) is a great low key place. They offer great classes and also give back to the community by offering a few pay what you can classes. They also offer yoga retreats in Puerto Rico and Salsa dance lessons. They were also giving classes in BedStuy but I'm not sure if they are still doing it.

I periodically attend the Sunday morning (10 AM) hot yoga class by Yoga People at the Ft. Greene Sports Club on Fulton and Ashland. Even though beginners are welcome (I myself am one) the instructor is demanding, but that's a good thing becuase that way you get the most out of the hour and a half. You really get you sweat on and it is a great form of exercise and stress relief and a good way to start the week.

I thought I noticed a Bikram Yoga sign on Fulton near near Washington or Clinton, but it disappeared. Anyone know anything about it?

i like yoga lab on atlantic avenue. terrific instructors and not too far from the hood in boerum hill.

The Hot Yoga class is not a "yoga" class in the traditional sense. It's merely a business calling itself yoga with all the wrong techniques. Best to show up and do your own way and ignore the instructors.

I vote for Yoga-People. The hot classes are fantastic and Anita, the instructor for the Bikram-esque classes is demanding, but very supportive. Plus, if you buy an unlimited annual membership you can use the gym, which is open 24 hours. They teach other classes beside hot and they often offer free intro classes.

I'm with you Anon at 12:53 - hot yoga is a bad idea. Stick with the normal, regular temp yoga -you don't get totally gross and it's much safer -you are way more likely to injure yourself in hot yoga.

Not relevant to brownstones or anything, but it's good to know!

Has anyone found ashtanga in Brooklyn? I'm tired of going to Manhattan just to do the primary series.

looking myself for someone who offers Kripalu classes in Fort Greene or Clinton Hill. If anyone knows, please post.

Shambhala Yoga and Dance Center at St. Mark's and Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights offers Kripalu style classes as well as Iyenga, Restorative and Vinyasa and some dance, too. Although the Hatha classes aren't labeled Kripalu on the schedule, they are taught by very compassionate teachers who focus on breath awareness and mindful movement and the owners of the studio are Kripalu teachers. Very resonable prices, too.

i've been to three classes at lucky lotus on dekalb. seems pretty down to earth and rigorous. on tuesday night they have an $8 class. pretty good if you're more on the purist side, i think, of things.

The best yoga is AREA Yoga in Carroll Gardens. No doubt the most amazing teachers and coolest atmosphere. Very relaxing and unpretensious.

hot yoga is fine.. you need to go to bikram class actually. hot yoga is the modified version. and you cant injure yourself unless you are trying to hard. to the poster who mentioned injury, you can injure yourself in any type of exercise the trick is being careful and knowing your limits.
