Ledger and Williams Opt to Own, Not Rent
Australia's Daily Telegraph has the goods on the house that Academy Award nominees Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams have purchased in Boerum Hill. According to the article, the Brokeback Mountain stars paid $3.5 million (AUS $4.7 million) for the four-floor house "two blocks south of Smith Street" last year after getting to know the neighborhood while renting a nearby townhouse. Ledger, who's had a rocky relationship with the paparazzi in Australia, has found Brooklyn's residents to be a good deal mellower. "He's very nice and they're very sweet people," said his neighbour Margaret Cusack. "We got to go to the premiere of Brokeback Mountain – he gave us tickets."

The price (according to the article) is $3.5 million US ($4.7 million Australian)

They paid $4.7 million Australian, which is $3.5 million U.S. I thought $4.7 million looked a little high for a four story in Boerum Hill.

Good catch.

$4.7MM USD is high for a 4-story, but $3.5MM isn't?
when did boerum hill reach park slope-ian heights? or more like it, bklyn heights-price-levels??

The price is higher than anything else in the neighborhood, but how many of us wouldn't sell our right arm for that three car garage? :P
Posted by: Shahn Andersen at February 14, 2006 9:35 AM
Bet the three-car garage sealed the deal--so much easier to go directly from the Lincoln Navigator to the house and avoid any unwanted cameras...
Posted by: Brownstoner at February 14, 2006 9:36 AM
But was the garage worth the extra $1.8m they paid more than the price of a normal extra luxe Boerum Hill brownstone?
Posted by: anonymous at February 14, 2006 9:45 AM
i'm sure once the seller found out heath was interested, the price immediately shot up a couple hundred thousand.
but ok, w/ the 3 car garage, $3.5mm might be feasible. might.

Can they just be left alone

What corner is that?
Posted by: Anonymous at February 14, 2006 10:02 AM
yes, can anyone tell us what corner this is because the article reads 2 blocks SOUTH of smith street shopping...well south would being us to red hook and we know it's not red hook. i think they mean east
Posted by: anon at February 14, 2006 10:16 AM
i was going to ask the same thing as anon -- how can you be two blocks south of smith street? doesn't smith run north/south?
Posted by: Pietro at February 14, 2006 10:21 AM
well its NOT 134 hoyt as mentioned here earlier, but it is nearby.
Posted by: boerum_hill at February 14, 2006 10:23 AM
We purposefully weren't any more specific about the location than the article. Let's leave it at that.

I live across the street from this house but I haven't seem them. Or at least I don't think I have. I did notice last weekend that roughly half the couples in the nieghborhood with babies could be them.

They're a nice couple, I've seen them shopping often on Smith and Court. Always stop to chat to store owners, etc. -- no different from anyone else in the area.

i think that the b'stoner readership in general is the type to leave people alone. it's just a silly piece of fluff to lighten our days as we debate the competing philosophies of brooklyn living...(I'll bet even baudrillard reads US...)

And the house was bought from Nell Campbell, aka Little Nell. She played Columbia in the Rocky Horror Picture Show and, I believe, was the proprietor of Nells, the nightclub in Manhattan.

The place is on Dean ... this is public knowledge as there was a big discussion on this on curbed recently.

What does the facade look like? The back is not that attractive from the picture.
Posted by: Anonymous at February 15, 2006 10:04 AM
a bit off-topic here, but just to correct 12:55pm's post:
Nell Carter, beloved stage and screen actress and Jazz music artist, was the founder of the classic Nell's club, not the Australian author 12:55pm mentions.
No offense, but reading that in 12:55's post practically made me spit my coffee, made for a good chuckle.
Nell's club is all about Jazz, soul and R&B, an unmistakeable extension of Nell Carter herself.
Well, not quite unmistakeable, I guess.
(and again, no offense intended, 12:55...this just really cracked me up... ;)

You are totally wrong about who founded Nell's. It was NOT the late, great Nell Carter -- although I wish she had started a venue. That would have been a cool spot.
Posted by: Anonymous at February 15, 2006 12:53 PM
Nell Campbell founded the Nells on 14th street. You made me doubt it so I googled it. Nell's is Nell Campbell, not Carter.
