building building
We got an email from a reader wondering about the project going up at 117-119 Court aStreet at the corner of State. We didn’t know, so we swung by this weekend to take a look. All our detective work turned up was that Massey Knakal is selling the ground-floor commercial space. Our emails to the listing brokers seeking color on the residential portion went unreturned so we’re hoping someone out there in the ether knows the skinny.

  1. Danny and his family ran the Chinese Restaurant that used to be on that corner for years.(I ate there for years too). He owned the property and realized it was far more valuable as real estate. I lived on Schermerhorn on that block, and if you check you’ll see this is probably the most active construction area in Brooklyn. Along with the finished Law School building, there is the new building across Boerum, on State, whatever it is they are building mid block on State where the collapsed garage was, the 12Trees apartments along COurt, Danny’s building, the new building going up on Schermerhorn between Court and Boerum (which they tore down a lovely old CHurch building for), and the gut rehab of the Board of Ed building. Just around the 1 square block defined by Schermerhorn, Court, State and Boerum. Anyone wonder why I moved? I used to live in one of the 3 pre-war townhouses in the middle of the block.

Not sure why Danny had trouble getting funding but before he tore down the building he told me he was trying to find a buyer and hadn’t had much luck. He said the property seemed to be more valuable empty so my guess is they tore it down and still couldn’t find a buyer so he decided to do it himself.

  2. Not Lookout Hill which is on State. This is the site of “Danny’s Re-Grand Opening” Chineese restaurant. They literally demolished the buidling themselves and have been building in fits and starts (I guess cash flow is an issue). Not a big developer from what we here in the neighborhood but just Danny and family.

  3. The DOB records show that it was filed under 183 State St. Commercial on the ground floor, floors 2 through 6 each have a 5 rooms, 3 baths apartment per floor, and floors 7 & 8 and 9 & 10 are 5 rooms, 3 baths duplexes.
