Nothing Like A Little Lopsided Construction

window
Progress (if you can call it that) continues at our favorite death-trap-in-the-making on Greene and Grand. Can anyone tell us why the cinderblocks seven rows down from the top are not square? Are they making up for the entire building not being true?
Sketchiness Continues at Greene and Grand [Brownstoner]

Yikes! Are we sure this thing's not just a set awaiting a camera crew and pyrotechnics team? I hate to think of people actually living in there.

someone call the dob on those guys. someone gonna get hurt soon. someone that lives near there should do it.

most likely the cmu (concrete masonry unit/cinder block) is resting on a piece of angled steel at that location. and since it looks like that is at the roof, the steel is probably angled by design to proved for drainage. i see nothing wrong here. if i were the owner of a 100 year old brownstone, i'd be more worried about what's hidden behind my own walls. i would bet it isn't pretty.

CMU my butt! drainage into middle of roof? come on architect dude, you CRAZY!

Posted by: Anonymous at April 13, 2006 2:35 PM

I'm no architect, but I walk by that jobsite every day, and I've never seen any steel there...just a lot of cinderblocks and illegal workers, and most recently, rats.

i second that, i live across the street and this whole operation has resembled an elaborate children's clubhouse construction project. i wouldn't be surprised if they started stealing old doors from Eddie's store and using them as wall reinforcements. no girz alloud!!

Posted by: ChrisG at April 13, 2006 3:26 PM

It's obviously the outline of an in-wall slip-in-slide for the rats to play on when it rains.

I just went past there and they've covered the side with some kind of flat stuff. So the sins are buried!

Proof once again many many retarded people live and work in the greatest city on earth. We're No. 1!

I was wondering the same thing about the drainage- not being an architect I hope I'm not sounding too stupid if I ask is it possible the drainage pipe will be toward the center of the building so front and back drain there? In the prewar I used to live in the drainage pipe was outside my lvgrm window which was in the center of the building. The rear of the building narrowed at that point via a cutback.

And what are those holes in the cinderblock at the bottom of the picture? Do they serve some purpose? I get the feeling this builder must be the same one who is doing that ghastly building up Fulton with the multimedia facade.

Perfect example of sketchy journalism again. Perhaps this is faulty construction? But perhaps its not? And then what is this but slander? Should a bunch of anonymous people on some widely read website get to set the record on this forever? Why not call an expert and interview them, or pick up the phone and call the architect or the contractor that's listed on the DOB filing and see what they have to say and compare it to what your indie. expert has to say. This is the proper way to conduct an investigation. Do you see the NY Times putting up a picture and asking all their readers to vote and dish on whether we like the way they are handling the Clean Air Act or the Kyoto Protocol or the "peace" in Afghanistan or the rebuilding of the Gulf? No. This happens on the Channel 11 News when they are talking about things like Jennifer Aniston's hair or Gwyneth's baby's name. Not something that could harm a person or a business. Or else they'd get sued. Which is probably something Brownstoner ought to be thinking about because that's going to set him back more than all the ad revenue he might be missing out on.

In case you might not have noticed, this isn't the new york times. This is a blog.

Brownstoner may post his opinion, but he makes it perfectly clear that he's not an expert on this building, hence all question marks.

If you want to talk journalism, call Bill O'Reilly.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 17, 2006 10:56 AM

Let's stop talking journalism and start talking what constitutes slander? BTW, I am in no way affiliated with this builder. Just thinking that maybe some of you people better start realizing that what you are putting out here has a long shelf life. And it's irresponsible to publicly diss something you KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about. And that goes double for Brownstoner who is the one holding himself up as a journalist.

Disgusting work, illegal workers, won't file for tax -abatement ( cheap) , all around mess !!! Then the developer will close the deal without a CO and the confused buyer with no real representation will foreclose......... Then CRACK HOUSE

THE CYCLE with these disgusting , fly by night wannabe Developers - investors - still in ESL ASS HOLES

Woah, guys. You are hitting on one of my favorite subjects (citizen journalism, and why some people like rules) but quit with the "illegal workers" shit. You have no idea whether the workers are illegal or not. You are assuming they are because they look Mexican.
