garden
As planned, the rest of the sod was laid yesterday and the bench that helps separate the concrete portion from the rest of the yard–and will provide a place to perch during barbecues–was constructed. There are probably a few finishing touches for the Jonathan and Ryan to do (we haven’t had time to do a “walk-through” yet) but from here on in, the rest of the work, i.e. the planting, is ours. If anyone’s interested in our crew’s services, you can reach Jonathan Yevin at 917-692-2054.

  1. Beautiful! I’m jealous…Brownstoner, I’m hoping that you will be incorporating a compost bin and rain barrel into the design somewhere (rain barrel diverter from the gutter into barrel; compost bin does better in the sun). It’ll be a great thing for you and your family to use both of those objects, and they are simple to install.

  2. is there any path that leads to the bluestone patio? if not, you might think about putting a few spaced apart slabs so that you don’t wear away the grass…(just a suggestion)
otherwise looks like you guys are ready for a bbq!

  3. Your garden looks lovely. Where are you going to put the kiddie pool? I second the reco’ for butterfly bush, it fills out nicely and is easy-care. comes in different colors too. Clematis is also beautiful but it’s a vine so would only be for covering the fence. One of the smaller, mildew-resistant lilacs would also fill out some border space without taking over.
As long as you get enough sun, you can find plenty of easy-care plants with different peak blooming times so there’s always something pretty to look at (lilac – spring, clematis – late spring/early summer, butterfly bush – all summer long). have fun!

  4. Not sure about the fence posts, but it would seem to go against the general rule of giving your neighbor the “good side” of the fence.

Looks great otherwise. A water feature of some kind would be a nice finishing touch.
