Brownstoner Garden: Contractor's About Done
As planned, the rest of the sod was laid yesterday and the bench that helps separate the concrete portion from the rest of the yard--and will provide a place to perch during barbecues--was constructed. There are probably a few finishing touches for the Jonathan and Ryan to do (we haven't had time to do a "walk-through" yet) but from here on in, the rest of the work, i.e. the planting, is ours. If anyone's interested in our crew's services, you can reach Jonathan Yevin at 917-692-2054.

It's lovely. Is that a bench in the foreground?

I have no idea what you like, but, if you have kids, can I recommend a butterfly bush? It's a bit of work--you have to hack it down every autumn--but it draws butterflies like crazy and blooms all summer long.

I second the recommendation for Jonathan and Ryan. They are great to work with!

yard looks great...My guess is that the photo is off center NOT the fence.

What exactly are your plans for the blue stone patio in the middle of the lawn? Will you put a table and chairs there? And what are the dimensions of the concrete area?

Congratulations, Brownstoner. It looks great. You are going to have a wonderful summer out there.
Have I missed any posted solutions on what to do about these vicious Asian Tiger mosquitos looming in our future?

Did we get a cost estimation...? PLEASE, I'm on the fence of paying for someone to help me do my yard, or gettin' down and dirty myself. Come on B'stoner.. tell us how much!!!

very nice. not 100% about the square in the middle of the lawn...visually makes everything look smaller...but thats just me...you need a tree or two...

yes, butterfly bush is nice. but i still think an arbor with perhaps wisteria or morning glory growing up.
low maintenance and so pretty.
i had one done in my yard and a privacy fence. it made all the difference. look into it and see if you like it.

Puleese don't plant Morning Glory. I know it is cheap easy to grow, but it is a highly invasive exotic, and once you put one seed in your yard, you will never be able to get rid of it, and neither will any of the future generations, or your neighbors.
Try something like Clematis, which might cost a few $ but stays where you plant it and flowers beautifully.

I believe putting the fence posts on the outside of your fence is a violation. If either neighbor complains and/or calls DOB you will have to take the fence down and redo it.

Not sure about the fence posts, but it would seem to go against the general rule of giving your neighbor the "good side" of the fence.
Looks great otherwise. A water feature of some kind would be a nice finishing touch.

Your garden looks lovely. Where are you going to put the kiddie pool? I second the reco' for butterfly bush, it fills out nicely and is easy-care. comes in different colors too. Clematis is also beautiful but it's a vine so would only be for covering the fence. One of the smaller, mildew-resistant lilacs would also fill out some border space without taking over.
As long as you get enough sun, you can find plenty of easy-care plants with different peak blooming times so there's always something pretty to look at (lilac - spring, clematis - late spring/early summer, butterfly bush - all summer long). have fun!

is there any path that leads to the bluestone patio? if not, you might think about putting a few spaced apart slabs so that you don't wear away the grass...(just a suggestion)
otherwise looks like you guys are ready for a bbq!

it really is looking quite nice. an arbor would look pretty and also give off some shade. otherwise it's lovely and can't wait to see the finished product.

Beautiful! I'm jealous...Brownstoner, I'm hoping that you will be incorporating a compost bin and rain barrel into the design somewhere (rain barrel diverter from the gutter into barrel; compost bin does better in the sun). It'll be a great thing for you and your family to use both of those objects, and they are simple to install.

I second the barrel idea. Your garden looks BEAUTIFUL. Congratulations the Brownstoner Family.

Looks beautiful. Nice work.

Persian Lilacs. They are the best. They smell incredible, they are easy to maintain, and they will always remind you that spring is worth waiting for.

Re: fences
Where are you guys from? Noboby gives their neighbor the good side of the fence. If they don't like it, they can put up their own fence.
