An update from a reader on the renovation of Strong Place Church: “Work has begun! So far, mostly removing lots of debris from inside the church. Now the scaffolding is going up.” So we see.

  1. #1, thanks for the update. The rumor has it that the marketing of another church condo Sanctuary in Fort Greene will start in fall. Any word on this one?

  2. The contractor has been focusing on removing the water logged plaster and the wood elements that are not salvageable. They have also begun to carefully remove the wood elements that can be saved and possibly re-used.
The ceiling and many of the decorative plaster arches are coming down in large soggy chunks. The wood behind the plaster has rotted away and in many cases is only attached in one or two places. The good news is that some of the wood panels have come off in one piece and we are optimistic about the rest of the woodwork as well.
The exterior walls and much of the roof structure seem to be in decent shape and ripe to restore. Engineers have been inspecting them as the removals continue.
I will provide a few photos and another update when the contractor is a little further along.
