mansion
We can’t figure out what the heck is going on with 447 Clinton Avenue. The 9,000-square-foot Italianate mansion (which dates back to 1850) housed the Galilee Baptist Church until earlier this decade. The church finally sold it to some investors for, in retrospect, the small sum of $1,725,000. The new owners cleared several dumpsters worth of stuff out of the building before putting it back on the market in a few weeks later for $3,900,000. That’s where the trail ends. We don’t know whether a new buyer stepped up or if the people who bought it from the church still own it. There were rumors of a condo conversion several months back but there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot going on. Who’s got the 411?

  1. I used to rent from Sandy Nager in Prospect Heights. I’m sure I was in one of his low-end buildings, but his ideas of reno were crap in that case. He owns buildings all over PH and CH. I worry for a beautiful building like this one…

  2. I actually tried to buy this place in march 2005 but the owner wanted too much for it. He was originally asking 4.3M for it!! The insides have mostly been torn out. The center staircase area is still quite magnificent.

I recently heard from a friend who knows the owner well that it had sold. But I think they are having some issues with landmarks about the condo conversion plans and I am not sure if the sale went thru.

  3. LLC that bought the house is called Clinton Rising, and entity is registered to C/O SANFORD NAGER
    106 SOUTH ELLIOT PL.
    BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, 11217

  4. I live next door to this place – it is a mess! the owners have gotten fined repeatedly by sanitation for the garbage. it looks like there were squatters there too because it got boarded up recently and no trespassing signs were put up. it is huge and with the carriage house could be converted into something really cool. kinds spooky too!

  6. This is not the place with the ladder – that is the former mayor of Brooklyn’s house (405 Clinton) which is also in a sad state of disrepair. Do a search on NYT.

  7. i’ve always wondered about that building. if you look up at the chimney as you pass by you can see a ladder that someone was using for repairs (i assume). it has been up there so long there are vines covering it by now.
