Say what you will about Knockout Construction’s lack of morals and ethics, but those guys can really boogie when they want to accomplish some illegal demolition! And what a great work ethic: They’ll even work holiday weekends (when there’s not a chance in hell one of the corrupt lazy DOB inspectors would get off his turkey-stuffed fat ass to check up on them)! After we posted the video of the mechanical demolition proceeding sans permit last Tuesday, the crew working at 340-342 22nd Street went into overdrive, as the accompanying video shows. As of yesterday, there wasn’t a scrap of evidence sign that two buildings used to stand on the site. And now perhaps the saddest news of all: The old lady who fought the developer of 340-342 22nd Street, until her recent death has had her heirs sell her house at 338 22nd Street to said developer, dishonoring her memory and hooking up the developer with 75 feet of frontage.

  1. UPDATE:

340-342 22nd Street HAS AS A STOP WORK ORDER based up a “re-inspection” from 11/15/06 filed yesterday 11/28/06

Have to think the video and photos of the illegal mechanical demo had something to do with it 🙂

  2. “Anyone know how much trouble a contractor can get into for doing work without a permit? Do you think the penalties are greater for the owner v. them?”

Depends on what it is…may cause a stop work order on the job, or result in a DOB/ECB violation. Ultimately it is a slap on the wrist.

Now, illegal demo w/ o a permit, misdemeanor according to the new law passed by NY City Council 3 weeks ago…enforcement will be a bitch.

  3. Anyone know how much trouble a contractor can get into for doing work without a permit? Do you think the penalties are greater for the owner v. them?

A friend had a contractor do some work and come to find out he didn’t obtain permits as promised, and did lousy work. Should she bother reporting him?

  4. Poor 22nd Street, the poster child for all that is wrong with rezoning, DOB, etc. You’d think these developers would realize that 22nd Street residents have become too active and aware to let this kind of thing go unreported.
