hotel
There’s no reason a hip boutique hotel and a taxi driving school can’t exist side-by-side in perfect harmony, but the juxtaposition in this photo taken from 4th Avenue of the Andres Escobar-designed structure really drives home the proximtity. While the views out the back of the Gowanus Canal may be “breathtaking” (as the Courier recently wrote), but the view of the Boymelgreen monstrosity across 4th Avenue won’t help boost the nightly rates. Last we heard, the developer was gunning for a Q1 opening. Think he’ll make it?

  1. This area along 4th Avenue is going under massive changes . . . You all laugh at the prospect of shops and restaurants along 4th avenue but they will be here before you realize . . . What 4th avenue really needs here is a streetscape improvement! Crossing 4th avenue is totally hazardous with very narrow medians, and there are no street trees!

  2. this might actually spur the opening of some new restauarants/bars on 4th ave, which would be great. that area is so desolate right now.

and yes, a pretty good bet that it will make money. i’m sure they did their homework and hired consultants/finance folks. Why wouldn’t it work? there is a dearth of hotels in the slope and boerum hill.

  3. David, I can’t swear to this, but I think in one of the early posts about the hotel on Curbed–which I am too lazy to look up–the term long-term stay or something to that effect was used. Not exactly sure what that means, though.

  4. People are hung up on the developer’s marketing-speak term ’boutique,’ which granted is stupid. But it will do plenty of business, if not at the prices of the Soho Grand. Taxi garage or no, you’re still right across 4th Avenue from Park Slope, where your options are a few B&Bs, the Gowanus Holiday Inn, and, um, nothing.
