There's Gold in Them There Hills!
The NY Post highlights five new large developments on the docket for next year. The Brooklyn biggie on the list is the Oro Condominiums at 306 Gold Street. Continuing the downtown building boom, the Ismael Leyva-designed tower will be 40 stories high and be comprised of 300-odd apartments ranging in size from studios to three-bedrooms. The building may also set a nwe bar of luxury amenities in the borough, with a lap pool, indoor basketball court, screening room and concierge service. The tower won't be completed 'til 2008 but sales are expected to start next summer.

This is smack-dab in the middle of a pretty depressed area (situated, as it is, in the midst of on-ramps, off-ramps, overpasses and projects). If built, this would serve as a kind of hub connecting Dumbo and Vinegar Hill with Fort Greene and Wallabout. Sounds good to me.

I question Rascal's geography. Some of these projects may connect downtown with east-of-the-projects Fort Greene, but that's about it, IMHO.

Agree with 2:49. This area is not just depressed, but hopelessly disconnected from any vibrant neighborhood. The site is entirely hemmed in by awful urban planning; high-speed and wide Tillary, the massive projects (violent-crime common), and Ratner's awful Metrocenter wasteland.

gee, anon 6:10, do you always find the best in everything? Optimist by nature?
What is closest subway stop? Dekalb, Lawrence or Jay St?

At some point you have to say, can the new development, despite it's size and character, make the area worse? I doubt it. Populating an area with housing will make it a better area.

These towers cant make things worse but I cant understand why anyone would want to live in this area. Anon 6:10 you hit it pretty much right on the head--this area has about as much character as a Moscow suburb.
