house
This house at 311 Stuyvesant Avenue is a glorious slice of history, with original plaster and wood work out the wazoo. Although the listing says the house is soon to be landmarked (not sure if they mean the house itself), it currently sits a block and a half outside of the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District. The owner is asking $845,000 for the house, having paid just $638,000 in July 2005. Is it worth it? If you’re bullish on the area in general and junkie for detail, we’d say yeah. Especially compared to a something like this. (By the way, since when is The Developers Group in the townhouse business?)

  1. I live around the block and thought the house was beautiful and tastefully done. I was glad to see that it was a simple reno, and not some developer’s “special”. Or worse, it could’ve ended up as some owner’s “special” with mis-matched styles everywhere. A little more work, and it could be really something special. Hope it goes for the asking…

  2. Also saw the house on Saturday. I agree the house was nice and with some work it could be special. I think 725K for three floors is about right. The house is also right next to a store and the duplex only has one bathroom. The renovations were okay nothing special(alot of paint). Overall nice house but overpriced by 100K.

  3. Visited the house yesterday loking for some other opinions about what other visitors of the open house thought. nice house 850 nottttttttttt. But i live in the community so i hope it sells for the price. good details they couldnot have put in 150k worth of work. Craftmanship was sort of shoddy, but otherwise beautiful should go for 725 like the other home on Halsey that was for sale this summer

  4. i concur with the comments made at 1:55 am. There are beautiful parts of Bedstuy and sketchy parts of bedstuy as well which is the case in many neighborhoods. The people in cobble hill, boerum hill and surrounding areas will soon get a piece of this harsh reality (influx of shady characters and areas) when the new arena arrives. You will soon be introduced to some of the desirable and less desirable citizens of the Big Apple. The neighborhood that stands to flourish from the development of the stadium the most is bedstuy (for true brownstone aficianados). It will truly be some irony when the bigots and critics of bedstuy will opt to migrate to bedstuy because there once quiet tranquil neighborhoods now resemble manhattan. So i say that if you are afraid of diversity and change then by all means move to greenpoint and pay 850k for a 1300 sqft condo. I repeat we dont want the likes of shady characters like you here to ruin our growing appreciative diverse community.

  5. Starting to wonder who, besides those who have identified themselves as neighbors, have been to Stuyvesant Heights. Let’s remember that Bed-Stuy is a huge neighborhood, with, yes, some pretty sketchy areas near the some of the projects. I’ve lived here for almost 2 years. The first summer I had two comments on the street directed at me for being white. This past summer, not a single comment and instead I just meet more and more of my amazing and lovely neighbors. I got hassled way more for simply being a woman when I moved into the East Village and my neighbors rarely said hello.
Sorry, but I think there is still a lot of racism which is keeping a number of people from coming. And frankly, that’s okay. I don’t want those people to move here. Pay 850K for some condo or coop in Park Slope where you have to go to awful meetings and they tell you what you can and can not do with your property and the chance for income potential is greatly diminished. and by the way, what makes the other post think my neighbors aren’t lawyers, etc.?

  6. I agree with you Jeremy. Your comments were’nt racist. There are people in the nabe who don’t want diversity – sexual or racial. Just like in white ethnic neighborhoods, the people you’re describing are usually young and ignorant thugs. Think about the vicious beating in Williamsburg a couple months ago. The point is that these people are the exception not the rule. As a rule you cannot find a more community-minded neighborhood than Bed-Stuy. We know all our neighbors and we care enough to smile and say hello when we see each other. Great house. It’s certain to sell. I’ll be at the showing.
