306 Gold
condoWe went by the new offices of our friends at etsy.com on Saturday and found ourselves with a primo view of the construction at the Oro Condominium project at 306 Gold aka 147 Flatbush Avenue Extension. Rising on a site that once housed a Ford dealership, the building will ultimately be 40 stories high, with a slightly smaller sidekick across the street at 311 Gold. There’s already been plenty of press about all the fancy-schmancy amenities that will be available when the building is completed in 2008. As you can see from the photo on the jump, the sidekick project across the street has yet to break ground.

  1. I went to college by that address (Polytechnic University) in the late 90’s–the neighborhood has gotten MUCH better than it used to be at that time. My friends were telling me that there was a time when you would have to travel to the subway in groups at night (that’s not the case anymore). Metrotech, the new hotel, and the new federal buildings have all helped improve the neighborhood significantly. Plus, it’s a short walk from several subway lines, and 5 mins to LES. I’d consider moving in there.

  2. Wow, Anon at 2:18, what exactly is your problem? FWIW, I’m not fat, bald, nor “over the hill” (whatever that means). Cantankerous, definitely. Know-it-all — well, I know a grotesque tax break for the wealthy when I see it.

  3. Why do they build these ‘luxury’ building in the worst areas – who wants to live with all the traffic at Tillary Street, the lack of amenities, the charming AS Mall. Yuck. Where will they find people who want to live there.

  4. I meant 70+ stories in total — doesn’t the post refer to TWO towers, one 40 stories, and one smaller?

Subsidized ultra-luxury housing — this really turns my stomach.

  5. Very excited to see this stretch of Brooklyn transformed into a real urban downtown area. I hope better retail follows and that we get the commercial development the Downtown Rezoning envisioned. All residential will make for a very boring zone.

These new towers really are the best thing that’s happened to Brooklyn in a long time. Too bad Atlantic Yards is an all or nothing project. Incremental development could have brought us a masterpiece. Instead we get force fed half assed crap.
