Sea Park East: Clever and Dull

Cruising Flickr this weekend, we came across this shot of the Sea Park East, a UDC (predecessor of the ESDC)-funded "urban renewal" project. Despite being designed by fancy-pants Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the project was still labeled "clever and dull" by the 1978 AIA Guide. (What exactly do they mean by that, do you think?) The development was one of three large publicly-funded housing projects of the mid-70's, the other two being Roosevelt Island and Twin Parks in the Bronx. Thanks to fakeisthenewreal for the info.

Skidmore Owings and Merrill seems to specialize in the Clever and Dull School of Architecture. Very sad, given their history. Anyone say 'coasting ...' ... LONG TERM coasting ...
