City Sub
450 Bergen Street, Park Slope
“When it opened in 1996 (a fortuitous year in New York City history, it turned out, as it coincided with my relocation here), City Sub was an overlooked, dreary little closet languishing in the middle of a derelict block on the edge of Park Slope… City Sub survived by virtue of being off the main drag on what is still a pretty nasty stretch of Bergen. Thankfully, they’ve expanded, and now there’s proper seating, overhead lighting, and a substantial soda selection to compliment what are easily among the best deli-style sandwiches in the free world. Just ask the cops. City Sub is jammed wall-to-wall with them. And cops know sandwiches.” [Clean Plate Club]

Does City Sub really serve some of the best sandwiches in Brooklyn? You tell us… as soon as we get the comment function working again. In the meantime, check out the reviews after the jump: Gothamist heads to Bay Ridge for Chinese food; NY Press visits a gay bar in Crown Heights; Andrea Strong visits Flatbush Farm.

Lai Yuen
10033 4th Avenue, Bayridge; 718.567.2300
“Hearkening back to an aesthetic that includes warm towelettes hand delivered between courses, Lai Yuen speaks to our desire for crunchy noodles in wooden bowlsand an aging host in a two-button suit. The food, which often incorporates elaborate tableside service, isn’t half-bad. We kicked things off with Lai Yuen’s ‘Famous Eggroll’ — famous more in the manner of Lisa Loeb than Madonna, as it turned out.” [Gothamist]

Starlite Lounge
1084 Bergen Street at Nostrand Avenue, Crown Heights; 718-771-3340
“Google told me Starlite, like the East Village’s Starlight, was a gay bar. This makes sense in downtown Manhattan, but in Caribbean Crown Heights? Was the Starlite a signpost of gentrification? ‘No way,’ a smiley bartender informs me one raucous Thursday evening. ‘We’re Brooklyn’s oldest black-owned, nondiscriminating bar.’ He points to a banner boasting Starlite’s existence since circa 1960.” [NY Press]

Flatbush Farm
76 Saint Marks Avenue (between Sixth Avenue and Flatbush), 718-622-3276
“While there were some off moments in our meal, most of the comments at the dinner table were raves not boos. I enjoyed my dinner at Flatbush Farm. It’s not perfect; some of the food needs work, but this is the precisely the sort of restaurant I wish would open in my neighborhood. Here in Union Square/Gramercy, we really don’t have a good neighborhood spot for easy American food, a casual, fun place for a pint and a burger, or a sweet bar to chill out over a good cocktail that won’t break the bank. Flatbush Farm has nailed the elements of a great neighborhood restaurant. It has pitch perfect energy, the right balance of cozy and cool in the décor, and a menu of good crowd-pleasing food that you could eat every night of the week if you wanted to.” [The Strong Buzz]

  1. City Sub is no joke…Those subs will keep you fueled all day long. My friends and I have tried to nail down the exact source of the deliciousness, but it is elusive.

I suspect the excellent bread and the black / green olives I usually add to my #3. Though the have some serious competition with High Stakes Cheese Steaks just around the corner on Flatbush. Had my first cheese steak from them the other day and they are officially contenders.
