The three gorgeous shells on Classon between Quincy and Gates are finally getting brought back to life by the Pratt Area Community Council. Work has begun, as evidenced by the de-plywooding of the windows in the middle building and the large dumpster out front. While we’ve been critical of the community development corp’s activity on Washington Avenue, we’re thrilled that they’re saving these facades. (Even we wouldn’t argue that these interiors were salvageable.) All we’ve been able to gather about the project is that the three buildings are being combined into a single “multiple dwelling” building. Does anyone know details?

  1. I live a block away on Classon and see these every day and wonder when something was going to be done to save those buildings… Now someone needs to finish work on the 2 construction sites across the street that have been boarded up for years, especially the one next door to the deli.

  2. Wow, that’s excellent news. I was actually looking for new dwellings in that area, and I’ve driven past that property a few times. Will be interesting to see the end result. I wonder what the time frame is for the proect? I’d love to get in one of these at a reduced price. Bed Stuy is alive again!

  3. Let’s hope they employ local African Americans this time around. They seem to have a preference for non-English speaking workers.

  4. We are restoring the facade as historically accurate as possible, and From what I heard PACX are gut renovating the interior to create 12 condominium units (8 2 BR, 4 1 BR). The units are being developed through a government program, and will be sold at below-market prices to first-time homebuyers. They will market the units through a lottery, sometime during the construction period.
