A crowd of 40 or 50 people (with another dozen or so members of the media looking on) gathered this morning near the intersection of Flatbush and Dean to protest the planned destruction of four building in the Atlantic Yards footprint. After a stay of execution last Tuesday, a judge had denied a request by opposition group Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn for a Temporary Restraining Order; DDDB believes it is premature to tear down a bunch of buildings to create a parking lot for a project which has yet to clear all its legal hurdles. According to DDDB’s Dan Goldstein, “The demolitions are premature and an attempt to intimidate residents, and realize facts on the ground, creating blightwhere none existedby demolition.” From where we stood, it didn’t look like any back-hoes were waiting in the wings, so perhaps the buildings will live another day. As we were leaving, started chanting, “Fight the Blight, It’s Not a Done Deal!” On the jump: It wasn’t just senior citizens and the unemployed who made it to the rally this morning.

  1. AnonymAsshole–

Like any of you slime balls will stand out in public? Joey Deplasco has been caught time and again on boards all over Brooklyn (not to mention calling in to Brian Lehrer…!) and is recognizable because he’s so S-T-U-P-I-D and frequently I-N-C-O-M-P-R-E-H-E-N-S-I-B-L-E, not to mention P-R-E-D-I-C-T-A-B-L-E. The only one possibly worse is Tony Herbert!!!

You clearly have no idea of the ins and outs of the courts, which is unexpected, unless it just looks different from the defendant’s P-O-V. Let’s see what the JUDGE in the eminent domain case says, not the Magistrate, who did a good job of locking down any chance of appeal by Ratner for the Judge’s eventual decision that this case belongs squarely in federal court on constitutional grounds.

And I repeat my question: what is it YOU donate your time to, except crowing about corrupt political processes?

  2. Re: SmithBrotherJoe’s absurd comment, “if the project ever gets built”:

    1. The federal case is doomed. The magistrate recommneded that the suit be tossed and it’s only a matter of weeks before the judge does precisely that.

    2. After #1 occurs, the main option is state court, which is far less sympathetic than federal court. Otherwise, the opponents would not have bothered with federal court in the first place.

    3. Ratner is smart. He knows that the court cases are hopeless, so once they are dismissed, he will have demolished these buildings and can begin construction that much sooner.

    4. SmithBrotherJoe, kindly provide evidence that pro-AY posters work for FCR. What? Oh, that’s right. You don’t have any.

    D-O-N-E-D-E-A-L!!!

  3. What is it with Ratner?…I love that brownfield…I love that bakery even though it hasn’t been a productive facility for years and now that it’s being torn down…I didn’t move to the city have people building things all the time…I hate change…who cares about all those contruction workers anyways…they live in places like Queens and New Jersey…they aren’t real New Yorkers. I live in the city because it’s quiet and peaceful and I can enjoy a latte at 3 PM everyday while those other people are working.

Yeah Ratner sucks…he’s screwing this whole place up.

    LONG LIVE OUR BROWNFIELD!

  4. So which one of you Anonym-Asses is Joey Deplasco? And which one(s) of you Anonym-Asses are working for any of the bought-off CBA members, or are you just general real estate wonks who are stupidly thinking there’s anything for you in Atlantic Yards, if it ever gets built? Just in general, what do YOU give your time too? I think the people who are standing up to this farce are doing a great job and a public service. (I know you might need to look that concept up…)

  5. Reality Czech has a point, namely that AY opponents continue to do idiotic things like hold protests when most people are at their jobs. I guess that’s what happens when leadership is comprised of people who are so rich that they don’t have to work for a living.

Actually, 50 is a pretty high number for these protests. I wouldn’t be surprised if DDDB claims that 500 people attended.

    D-O-N-E-D-E-A-L!!!

    –DDDB is saying 100 people.
