The opening party that The Developers Group threw for the Karl Fischer-designed Ikon, one of the new additions to condo row on Bayard Street in Greenpoint, was over the top to say the least, but we guess that was the point. Valet parking, velvet ropes, slinkily clad hostesses, you get the idea. Despite a visit from DOB and some glitches with the elevator, the club music kept pumping and, more importantly to the hosts, wealthy prospective buyers kept shlepping through the model apartment. Whether all the glitz will pay off in the form of sales at the 58-unit development remains to be seen. If it does, it will be due in no small part to the much talked-about views (see below), which are pretty spectacular, especially if you’re a soccer fan. We haven’t seen any prices yet. Anyone heard anything?

  1. why are people here so foolish? BOTH williamsburg and greenpoint have had for years huge outsized toxic risks!! The locals who grew up here be they Polish, PR or Italian know the truth…they know all the family friends and neighborswho have died or sick from illnesses thought ties to the toxic exposures they have had…The

wburg and greenpoint have lower cancer rates than park slope, brooklyn heights and many other bklyn neighborhoods. There have been much analysis of the study you cite…there are problems on multiple levels with the study its methodology etc.. the real issue is that the City and State and Feds have not done the TYPE of studies they need to do to find out exactly what is going on here and why there are infact such high rates of illnesses….and for anyone with kids its well document with the kids b/c neighborhood groups though poor got moblized with help of the old school artists here (NOT the new faux trust fund hipsters!)in the 1990’s and started to get more tracking data on the kids— Williamsburg has amuch higher risk of asthma …and asthma itself causes other health risks…and verifies high pollution which is related to increased heart problems among other things…..

What kind of fool spend $1 mil on some condo and comepletely ignores such health risks to them and their family? I have lived here for several years and incurred health problems since, I am looking to move to Park Slope now though the old williamsburg had its charm, the health risks are just to great.

  2. “brokers and shitty frozen hors d’oeuvres”
The kosher version was pretty lame. You can not stop progress. I need a place to buy…The prices in the hood are very high…lots on brokers on this blog are pushing AGENDA….It’s great that some are able to make money from this…if you are buying into the hood petition to reopen the fire houses, bring a decent super market with affordable price, better/more schools & more banks

  3. How is being concerned about cancer “trash blogging”? views of manhattan are one thing, cancer is another and i don’t know how one could equate the two in a sentence – trust me, it sucks, and even if you live through cancer, it does make life pretty tough, if not “miserable”. Efforts to get to the bottom of how the environment is affecting people’s health should be supported because it affects everyone equally.

  4. Reading this blog is like driving past a bad car accident on the road, it’s so terrible that I just can’t help but continue reading. People need to grow up.
Arguing over views and cancer rates. It’s all Brooklyn…and anyone that lives in the area knows that it would take quite a sky scraper to affect that view from Kent.

For those people who can’t afford the Ikon, stop hating on it. The materials are top notch and expensive and anyone who has done any sort of rennovating knows that. The build quality may be poor, but regardless of whether you need a sub-zero…it’s still an expensive appliance. Now I wouldn’t waste the money or live on that ghetto park where the local kids come and hang out until all hours like it’s the local 7-Eleven.
And the summer concerts bringing in all the pseudo-hipsters and other new Yorkers slumming it in Brooklyn for the evening. But to trash the Ikon for the sake of trashing it…you people need to grow up and get with the times. Stop judging human beings on a real estate purchase, it’s ignorant. Do you really care? Does it really matter? Are you that upset that some people with a little more money are moving into Brooklyn to start a new life in a new neighborhood? Are they less entitled because they bought in a luxury condo?

Ask yourselves…is life that miserable for you all? Or do you just like trash blogging that much?

  5. Thank you 10:40 for posting the nyc.gov list of cancer rates. i too would like to see it broken down further by block, especially since williamsburg/bushwick seems like a pretty wide area for comparison. I’ve only been living in williamsburg for 4 years, but now i have lupus and my husband has multiple myeloma, a rare cancer that is extremely rare for a 31-year old. i’m not saying the neighborhood caused it, i’m just sayin… and obviously this affects both rich and poor, buyers and renters.

  6. “Umm, were you at the right building?? The Kitchen is outfitted with subzero and Miele appliances. The floors are Brazilian walnut. The bathrooms are lined in limestone and all fixtures are either Hansgrohe or Kohler.”

congratulations! you know how to read a brochure! and you bought into all the buzzwords. first of all, not all brazillian wood is pricey. second, why do you need a subzero fridge, wolfgang puck?! and thirdly, just because something is imported from germany doesn’t mean it’s automatically the best. i guess since you bought the damn thing, you’ll have plenty of time to spot the unflushed molding and bad spackling jobs that you’ve chosen to ignore. and, how is $750/ sq feet “reasonable” for an outter borough apt in a neighborhood that nobody wants you in (btw, thank you condo buyers for beating us in the unwanted-in-the-neighborhood dept). you’re in for another treat once the mccarren pool shows start. enjoy your STEAL of an apt!

  7. Greenpointers have been supporting Williamsburg stores and restaurants for years. Greenpointers do not have countless blogs taking cheap shots at Williamsburg. Greenpoint does not have countless not-for-profit’s working to hurt Williamsburg. It’s not Greenpoint vs. Williamsburg in the hearts of Greenpointers. But it seems the Billyburgers suffer from a mean case of low self esteem, considering their inability to spread the love.
