Because of the set-backs, the doubling in height of the formerly 3-story brick building at 554 Vanderbilt is less obvious from the front than it is from the rear. The revamped structure will have five floor-through apartments over the ground-floor storefront. We’ve got absolulely no idea if these will be condos or rentals or what the quality level will be. If you’re talking about Peter Schubert, we’ve never met the guy nor do we have any knowledge of where he lives but thanks anyway.
While the front facade is mostly quite plain, it does include some fussy little pillars that immediately give it that tacky Russian/Mediterranean feel. The northern stretch of Vanderbilt (before you reach Atlantic) has until recently had a wonderfully Edward Hopper-ish feel to it — simple vernacular low-scale red-brick buildings. But not for long. Reminds me of that abortion on St Marks Ave nr Carlton — a vertical extension done by brownstoner’s pal Peter Whatsi, the Massey Knakal broker who likes to tell Fulton St owners how they should respect the original architecture of Bed Stuy but then builds a stucco bunker atop his own house.
These buildings remind me of coin dispensers. press the top tab for pennies, the second for nickels, etc.
They will certainly produce more than change for the developers.
