We swung by the Strong Place Church between Degraw and Kane last week to see how efforts are progressing on its condo conversion. A glimpse into the massive building shows a complex maze of scaffolding, with reconstruction work being done to the building’s foundation and roof. Aside from having boarded up all the windows, it doesn’t seem like the crew is touching the façade. Despite the magnitude of the project, the construction didn’t strike us intrusive on the street level. Anyone have any info on the project’s timing?

  1. They said it would take a year and a half, but I would guess longer. Maybe ready for showing next summer? Then it is time to go for the brave little tree growing out of the top of the building!

  2. I saw the plans for this conversion and yes, the landmarks commission made them keep the entire outer walls intact. The apartments are interesting and each is different from the other. It seemed like a carefully wrought adaptive reuse. And it is in a great location. The stained glass windows had already been removed by the archdiocese, so they did not have that problem.
I grew up Catholic and I would still find it a little troubling to live in a church. But I doubt most people have that hesitation.
Looks like they will need another year to complete.
