After well over a year of wallowing in its own eyesoreness, the synagogue at Kent and Hewes in South Williamsburg finally started getting its outer coat earlier this week, according to the tipster who had the presence of mind to snap these photos while refueling at the adjacent gas station. The eyewitness reports that, in addition to the layer of stucco being applied to the exterior, the windows are even getting some Bricolage-esque lintels added to them. Think they’ll stop here or spring for a paint job? We wonder what finally got the powers-that-be off their ass.

Here’s a posititive post, and I’m not sure this gets covered a lot on this site, but the area around bedford between park ave and broadway has AMAZING brownstones, mansions and bricks with awesome mansard roofs. There’s something amazing about the way that they have all been modified with cage balconies and they’re all in a specific state of functional disrepair, and there’s such a busy street-life community around it. This is a fantastic brownstone neighborhood in it’s own right, and one that’s all the more interesting because it’s not going to ever follow the same trajectory as a park slope, boerum hill, etc…. and isn’t going to have the same kind of gentrification debate that clinton hill and bed stuy are now facing…

I would love to explore the why of this reality. This is a perfect example of a situation where there are many people who would open their arms and hearts to join these religious groups in creating a diverse peaceful community but it is not a goal that is shared by them. We see this all over the world with all different kinds of people. I feel perfectly comforatble standing up and saying that I think that separatist and supremist behavior is disgusting from anyone- even Jews.
5:35PM,and 5:06pm, as a Jew, and someone who will like attend High Holiday services at a Modern Orthodox shul, your objective comments do contain truth–at least as far as the non-Lubavitcher Chasidic Jews are concerned. (on the other hand, I cannot know what is in your hearts). The “why” of this reality is rather complex, and whether there is an explanationation/excuse for this is another question.

The Hasidim are separatists. They do nothing to better neighborhoods. They have no respect for anyone other than themselves. If I had a fear of persecution this is probably not what I would do to remedy the situation. I guess that you get what you look for and persecution seems to be a self-fulfilling prophesy when you treat others with such dismissiveness. It is hard to watch their behavior and to try to be open minded when they are so selfish and rude.
I concur the comments about the Hasidim having a tendency to break building, zoning and traffic laws. Yep, they build ugly buildings with illegal, probably dangerous construction and drive like maniacs… just like certain other ethnic groups have a tendecy to litter, play loud music and drink on the street.
Well anyway, Germans happen to be a VERY law abiding, obedient group and we saw how that turned out, so maybe it’s not always so rosy when everyone does what the governement says.
