As Gowanus Lounge has noted on several occasions, the development site on Kent Avenue between North 3rd and North 4th Streets has had a fairly unimpressive history so far. The former cement factory (which is actually three lots—157 Kent, 173 Kent and 224 Wythe—is now owned by the Chetrit Group which, for a major developer, has done a pretty amateurish job of demolishing and maintaining the property. Here’s what GL had to say about it in July:

Some demolition appears to maybe have been done without any permits being issued or fences going up. Well, a full fence did go up. Then, oddly, it came down, leaving what you see above available as the newest neighborhood hipster playground. A, uh, stop work order was issued in January. The property has been half-surrounded by a fence for a couple of months, since the above mentioned fence went up and came down. One “failure to maintain” violation notes, without any irony whatsoever: LARGE CONCRETE BLOCK 6′ X 2′ W X 2’D WEIGHING SEVERAL POUNDS IS NOT SECURED AND IS LEANING OUT OF PLUMB, ON EDGE OCCURRING AT VARIOUS AREA ALONG NORTH 4TH ST AND KENT AVE.

The project appears to be in a holding pattern: There’s still nothing filed at DOB about what the developer (which owns, among other properties, Chicago’s Sears Tower) plans to build on the site. Anyone heard anything? Update: As one commenter points out, there are plans for a one-story building filed here and a two-story building here. They sound too small to be right.

  1. And please, be original with your posts. We all look at the other blogs, so find your own info to “report” blog whatever on. It’s kind of lame and tiresome!

  2. try the “browse block” option on the “property Profile overview” & you will see that lot #1 has 2 “bin” numbers. hyperlink to the second “bin” number & you will see it shows 2 new buildings filed for that lot, one of which is “on hold”.

  3. please stop using the word hipster.

really. stop. are all unmarried 20 and 30 somethings automatically hipsters? anyway, the majority of the current condo buyers are, like probably everywhere, couples.

williamsburg is a very big neighborhood with a lot of different people including a growing number of small children. there are 3 pregnant women in our condo building alone, so i imagine that that demographic will only increase.
