What’s going on at June? The exterior of the Fort Greene restaurant recently began getting a makeover in anticipation of a change of stewardship. A source tells us that the owner of the restaurant (and the building) at 229 Dekalb Avenue decided to get out of the food biz himself and has rented the space to somebody “from Manhattan.” This is a pretty sweet corner location—it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with. 1. Il Torchio is pretty good, but I’d certainly love a Lil’ Frankies-esque outpost somewhere in the hood! Delicious and reasonable italian (especially to go) is a hole that could be filled in the FG/CH repertoire.

  2. I second that. Although the Italian on Myrtle called Il Torchio is superb; probably my favorite restaurant in the area. I’ll admit, though, I’ve heard dissenting opinions from friends, so maybe we’ve just gotten lucky. Only been there 4 times…
But I disagree about Mullane’s; it’s not so very good. In fact, I’d go ahead and call it pretty bad. I had a pasta/pesto dish there last Summer that ranks among the worst meals I’ve ever eaten.
I would welcome any number of businesses ( Bookstore, butcher, grocery) but if it’s to be a restaurant I’d like to see something simple and inexpensive with good solid offerings. An ‘upscale diner’ approach, I suppose you’d call it. With all the families in the area I don’t see how it could go wrong.

  3. June had poor food and the worst service I have ever seen (and I am a Manhattan native). Glad to see it go.

I sure hope the ‘French’ restaurant commentator is kidding because there are at least 3 other french restaurants on that block (Lulu, ici + Chez Oskar).

To the tap + grill guy – there is Mulliane’s on Lafayette and S Elliot. Pretty traditional bar + grill stuff.

You folks aren’t from around here are you?

  4. PLEASE — not another restaurant. FG has more than its fair share of restaurants. Interesting how much activity is going on within a few blocks of this: new dress shop where the old Beezu used to be, new restaurant Kif in the old LIquors spot. Also, Fulton is hopping these days as well with new and old businesses. Nice…
