Seventh Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues represents one aspect of the evolving nature of Gowanus that doesn’t involve hotels or housing. Over the past few years a couple of the block’s buildings have been revamped for office and light-industry purposes, and work on a music venue and nightclub in two other spaces is currently in progress. The Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment recently held a grand opening for its new space in one of the block’s repurposed industrial properties, joining The Mac Support Store, which set up shop in the same building last spring. Closer to 2nd Ave., The Sweater Factory features “post-industrial work lofts.” Across the street from the Sweater Factory, the owners of Union Hall are working on a new venue that’s set to open in the fall. The venue has tremendously high ceilings, unobstructed sightlines, and a stage that juts out onto the main floor. On the corner of 3rd Avenue, meanwhile, the owner of Manhattan’s Save the Robots is reportedly turning an old bodega into a nightclub. In between all the new and in-progress ventures, there’s still a steady hum of manufacturing business evident on the street and in many of its warehouses. GMAP

  1. There’s also a new music rehearsal and artist space being built in the same building as the gun manufacturer (9th & 2nd). The guys building it got hit with a stop work order a few weeks ago, but are doing everything legit now. And the rooms are huge! esp. compared to flood down the street. I think they’ll be done in july.

  2. Brooklyn Artists Gym is also on this block. They had an open house with an interesting artist this weekend, and there’s a new show there opening this week.

  3. Actually, 11:02, I don’t think DCP is planning to rezone all of Gowanus. I believe much of the southern portion will remain industrial.

  4. Speaking of Manufacturing – how many people are aware that only 1 block away there is a very successful Gun manufacture? Henry Arms: http://www.henryrepeating.com

Its a shame that the City Council will rezone this area and destroy a viable manufacturing base, when due to past pollution – the area will never be properly suited toward residential

  5. I’m really impressed by this building, the area and the growth as of late. I’m hoping it continues to develop…perhaps a bit like the Pearl District in Portland, Oregon did.

There are things about the two areas that are quite similar.

The new clubs sound like those NYC clubs of yesteryear…are we talking like megaclubs that will attract people from Manhattan?
That seems to be my impression…
