Yesterday a team of contractors hired by National Grid were doing a 6-foot-deep test dig into the soil underneath Thomas Greene Park in Gowanus. The diggers are investigating how much toxic material exists underneath the public space, which also goes by “Double D Park.” National Grid is looking into how polluted the area once occupied by a manufactured gas plant is. The next step at Thomas Greene, which is on 3rd Avenue between Douglass and Degraw, involves digging down around 60 feet under the park to collect soil samples, according to one of the workers there yesterday. Some locals want to make the playground a skate park. In the meantime, Double D’s pool is scheduled to open for the season in July.

The pool is great, we regard it as our backyard. REally nice toddler wading pool too.
Frankly, I’d sort of be glad if Park Slope sahm types continued to travel to Red Hook Pool or their beach clubs and stayed away. But that’s rather selfish, so I’ll squelch the sentiment.
It’s a great place, really nice workers, seriously refreshing, and rarely too crowded.
Like all city pools, it opens this Saturday.
It’s called Double D pool, but I’ve never heard the park called anything but Thomas Greene Park (if it’s called anything — it’s mostly deserted). The first poster is right: coal to gas plant back around the turn of the century. Anyone want to weigh in on whether the pool is safe? 🙁
nyc website says 6/28 as opening day for city pools. 7/4 seems awfully late.
I just met with someone from parks (on an unrelated topic) and was told all city parks open July 4.
That’s one Double D you don’t want to slip your hands underneath!
has two names: Double D cause it’s between Douglass & Degraw
Why is it sometimes called “Double D Park”?
The city pools are scheduled to open at the end of June. Is the July date for DD pool due to this testing?
if they made the gas from coal, its probably pretty well polluted
