Here’s another garden submission from Putnam Avenue in Bed Stuy.
I moved into my house in Bed-Stuy in 2000. I fell in love with the house and the backyard was a BIG added bonus. The initial challenge was getting the Sanford and Son junky backyard cleaned up. It took a dumpster and many weekends to get rid of the piles of debris and weeds. Next task at hand was putting up a fence to provide privacy. With the help of family and friends that was a success.
Given my busy lifestyle, that I am a concrete (city) girl (grew up in a Williamsburg apartment) and know very little about gardening, I decided to keep the maintenance to a minimum. Thus, I decided to dedicate only the perimeter of the yard to planting (mostly perennials including a few rose bushes and a hydrangea etc). The interior of the yard is tiled in a really warm-colored outdoor tile that reminds me of the Mediterranean. This arrangement leaves a lot of room for setting up a table for outdoor dining in the summer evenings or providing a dance area for my annual BBQ party.
The main part of the garden is dedicated to container plants to showcase flowery plants in beautiful planters that I have acquired in my travels to Costa Rica, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and the Southwest. The goal was to create a garden that is beautiful, homey and low maintenance. During the past two years, I have been getting help from Sassafrass Gardens. They provide an array of beautiful annuals and do some maintenance for me. In the event that it rains, my backyard also has an enclosed porch (not pictured) that comes in handy for those unpredictable days.

I’m a fan of the corner shelf too and the other hanging planters on the fence. It brings the eye up and adds height and dimension to the garden. Also with the plants hanging from the fence, the old stained wood looks rustic and cool, like a planned element. Really shows how people can find a way to work with what they got.
I like the corner shelf on the fence. Immediately had one of those ‘why didn’t I think of that’ moments. I may have to steal that idea as long as I can reinforce it. Neighbor cats love to cut through my yard and I bet they would find that a perfect jumping off or on spot.
And although I personally prefer grass, I really do like the tile look. It seems like the great spot to soak up some sun. Warm and toasty.

Regarding bringing home pots, I have done both. I have shipped the larger ones and have packed smaller one in my carry on. I protect the pots with my dirty laundry inserted in plastic bags.

I always think about bringing home pots when I travel, but always figure I’ll break something along the way. Do you have things shipped from your travel destinations or do you try to pack things?
