How long does it take to replace a water main? Way too long, in the case of the one that runs under Fulton Street in Clinton Hill. The DDC website still shows a completion date of January 2008, but they’re obviously not going to make that deadline! Councilmember Letitia James, who attributes some of the quality of life and retail problems between Classon and Clinton to the big dig, reports that DDC is now saying that the job should be finished this fall, possibly as early as September. We won’t be holding our breath.

  1. I feel very strongly that this project would have been finished along time ago or even ahead of schedule had it been in certain neighborhoods. This is ridiculous. Noone is being held accountable. The small mom and pop stores and businesses are suffering and the powers that be could care less. The elderly that have to walk the extra blocks at night to catch the buses on Atlantic are being placed in harms way as well as all travelers.Utter disgrace.

  2. Putnamdenizen, because the Fulton construction has made the road bumpy, slow and uneven and because of delays due to bulldozers and stopped traffic, cars avoid Fulton St. in favor of other easier rides.

    DeKalb is certainly impacted here.

  3. Since Fulton is one way going west, how has this moved traffic to Dekalb (also running west)? Wouldn’t it have had a greater impact on east-running streets? There does seem to be finally some signs of life in this area – the “Fulton on Clinton” (sic) condos at St James are occupied; and other projects seem to be crawling towards completion.

  4. No, Bianca, the local community board voted it’s support earlier this month and the City Planning Commission will review it next, in July. Without going into the mechanics of how business improvement districts are funded, I anticipate the new Fulton Street BID will be operational January 1, 2009.

  5. This is such an ugly stretch and all of the street construction only heightens the negatives. I hope to god they finish the street nicely, but my experience with these projects is it will only happen if residents are actively monitoring the work. City contractors seem to try to get by with as little as possible.
