A $17.3 million renovation of the Strand Theater on Fulton Street will result in new facilities for cultural organizations Bric Arts and Urban Glass. The Economic Development Corp. and Dept. of Cultural Affairs are overseeing the revamp, which will be designed by Leeser Architecture. Bric will gain about 20,000 extra feet of space in the repurposed theater, and Urban Glass will have a ground-floor gallery in the building. Per a press release from Bric, the Strand was built in 1918 as a vaudeville theater and later became a movie house, then a bowling alley in the ’50s, then a manufacturing space. The renovation is expected to be completed in 2010.

  1. This is good for my property value too. Now only if they can find a way to demolish the Meth Clinic, Pawn Brokers, Jewelry store & Check Cashing joint on Flatbush & 3rd, this area will get a whole lot better. All those buildings and stores are blight but I figure the BAM Cultural District can only get better and as property value in this area continue to rise that block I just described will be worthy of a tear down. The city should use imminent doamin & give that block to BAM. Also, when are the planters getting built on Flatbush Ave. This are has the potential to eclispe to Lincoln Center in due time assuming it’s done with heart.

  2. I always wondered about that building’s original use. This is great, I’m especially intrigued by an expansion of Urban Glass. We’re getting a nice little arts enclave in the area. This is good for the neighborhood, for aspiring artists, especially kids, and for Brooklyn as a whole.
