Despite reports last month of Brooklyn’s hotel-development woes, a four-story, 81-room “boutique hotel” is proposed (but not yet approved) for a 22,500-square-foot plot at 17 Seabring Street in Red Hook, according to the developer and the DOB. We couldn’t get the developer to send us a rendering, and the architect, Michael Kang, doesn’t have images on his Web site yet, so who knows if this is a high-styling spot or a humble little joint off the BQE (this spot is far from the hipster haven of lower Van Brunt street)? 1. Funny… one night, back when we were in Red Hook we were out walking the dog down the stretch of Commerce right behind that site. (You can see from the Google sat view how it connects.) It was lateish and there were bright industrial light on inside the site. So we peeked in between the slats and sure enough there’s a bunch of guys in hazmat suits digging around in there. God know what they were doing, but it didn’t look too safe.

We moved out of Red Hook not too long after that.

But good luck with that boutique hotel!

  2. LOL. I’m sure this has everyting to do with the Cruise terminal across the street. But seriously, as a Red Hook resident I can tell you Seabring is one of the blocks with a serious odor problem due to the carting companies. But considering Canal Carting’s lease was bought out by the city when they built the Cruise Terminal, maybe that will happen here. And this isn’t that far from the Brooklyn Motor Inn, which clearly sees enough business to stay open, though of what variety I’m not sure.

And, Lisa, I assume you mean Van Brunt down by the Fairway when you say ‘lower’ Van Brunt, but the numbers actually go up as you head in that direction.

  3. my dad had a conference in downtown brooklyn a few weeks ago and his company put him up in the comfort inn by the canal. He said it was fairly convienent because he could walk downtown and do his work stuff. He however knew the area and knew he was staying by the canal.

I dont see companies putting people in a hotel in red hook.
